Charting the Human Condition: Our Integrated Degree Programs
The Faculty of Humanities at Niigata University consists of a single, unified Department of Humanities. Within this department, we have established three distinct Degree Programs that allow students to navigate the vast landscapes of human thought, society, and culture.
While each program offers a rigorous path to specialization, they are not isolated silos. Our curriculum is designed to encourage fluid movement across disciplinary boundaries—where a student of philosophy may find new insights through sociological fieldwork, or a linguist might deepen their understanding through the lens of history. By integrating classical methodologies with contemporary perspectives, we empower our students to develop the critical thinking and analytical tools necessary to address the complex questions of our time.
Our Three Degree Programs
Psychology and Human Studies
This program offers a multi-faceted exploration of human nature, bridging the gap between empirical science and philosophical inquiry. It encompasses the fields of Psychology, Philosophy, Ethics, Religious Studies, and Art Theory (Aesthetics and Art History).
Students engage in the scientific analysis of mental processes and social behavior while simultaneously developing deep theoretical insights into the intellectual and artistic heritage of humanity. Our curriculum empowers students to address contemporary ethical and existential challenges through a synthesis of rigorous data analysis and classical humanistic thought.

Studies of Societies and Cultures
A vibrant center for the study of human societies across time and space, this program integrates Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Folklore, Archaeology, Geography, History (Japanese, Asian, and Western), and Media Studies.
Moving beyond traditional historiography, we focus on the lived realities of communities and the evolving landscapes of modern media. Through extensive fieldwork and the critical analysis of diverse archives—ranging from ancient artifacts to contemporary digital communication—students learn to decipher the complex structures of social interaction and the cultural dynamics that shape our world.

Studies of Languages and Cultures
This program investigates the essence of human communication and the rich diversity of global cultures through the dual lenses of linguistics and literary analysis. It covers a broad spectrum of languages and traditions, including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, English, French, German, and Russian, as well as General Linguistics.
Leveraging Niigata’s strategic position as a historical and contemporary hub of the Japan Sea Rim, our curriculum provides a unique perspective on the cross-cultural exchanges and linguistic tapestries of East Asia and beyond, fostering high-level language proficiency and a nuanced understanding of global literary expressions.

Our Faculty
The cornerstone of our educational excellence is our diverse community of scholars. The Faculty of Humanities is home to approximately 60 full-time faculty members, each an expert in their respective field. From scholars exploring the intricate dynamics of contemporary society and human cognition to specialists in classical literature, linguistics, and regional history, our professors are dedicated to both pioneering research and the intellectual growth of our students.
